Small and young radio sources

چکیده

It is currently accepted that compact and bright radio sources characterized by a convex spectrum peaking at frequencies ranging from 100 MHz to a few GHz are young objects. In this scenario, high frequency peaker (HFP) radio sources, with a turnover frequency higher than 5 GHz are good candidates to be extremely young radio sources with ages of up to a few thousand years. The knowledge of the conditions in young radio source is fundamental in order to draw reliable evolution models able to describe the entire life-cycle of the radio emission. Given the high spatial resolution and the large frequency range spanned, VLBI observations provide a unique opportunity to constrain the physical conditions in young radio sources, and to investigate the role played by the environment on the source growth. Recent VLBI results are discussed here.

Estimating the Number of Wideband Radio Sources

In this paper, a new approach for estimating the number of wideband sources is proposed which is based on RSS or ISM algorithms. Numerical results show that the MDL-based and EIT-based proposed algorithm havea much better detection performance than that in EGM and AIC cases for small differences between the incident angles of sources. In addition, for similar conditions, RSS algorithm offers hi...

We have studied the interrelation of young AGN with their hosts. The objects of study are the young and powerful GPS and CSS radio sources. Due to their small size, GPS and CSS sources are excellent probes of this relation. Furhthermore, their young age allows us to compare them to the larger, old radio sources and establish a time-line evolution of this relation. Combining imaging and spectros...

Young radio galaxies and their environments

Many of the powerful radio galaxies observed at high redshift are very small, presumably because they are very young. A simple model, which treats the radio source as a bubble expanding into a radially stratified medium, is capable of explaining the main features of their size and luminosity evolution. In particular, the model predicts strong negative luminosity evolution with increasing size, ...

Young Extragalactic Radio Sources

Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources and Compact Symmetric Objects (CSO) are selected in very different ways, but have a significant overlap in properties. Ever since their discovery it has been speculated that they are young objects, but only recently, strong evidence has been provided indicating that GPS sources and CSOs are indeed the young counterparts of large, extended sources. They ar...

High Frequency Peakers

There is quite a clear anticorrelation between the intrinsic peak frequency and the overall radio source size in Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources as shown by O’Dea (1998). This feature is interpreted in terms of synchrotron self-absorption (although free-free absorption may play a role as well) of the radiation emitted by a small radio source which is gro...
